What is palliative care?
Palliative care provides relief from the pain, symptoms and stress of serious illnesses. Palliative Medicine Consultants work with the plan of care set by your other doctors to treat symptoms, maintain function and restore quality of life.
- Treat your pain using medicine or other techniques
- Control distressing symptoms including: breathing difficulty, weakness, fatigue, nausea, bowel and bladder problems, anxiety, depression and insomnia.
- Improve your ability to tolerate medical treatments
- Help you navigate the healthcare system
- Provide practical information and assistance for you and your caregiver
- Offer support for other concerns affecting you and your family
When can palliative care help?
Palliative care can be started at home, in a nursing home or in the hospital. It is best to start early to maintain and improve your function and quality of life. We will work with your doctor to design a treatment plan, monitor your progress and make changes as needed to provide ongoing relief and support.
Palliative care is often provided at the same time as other treatments (such as chemotherapy or radiation). It can also help those who will need support for their condition for many years to come.
How can I get palliative care?
To have a consultation with a palliative care physician, ask your doctor for a referral or call us at (717) 735-3131. Care is available for patients of all ages. Medicare or insurance plans usually cover palliative care. However, if you are without coverage, care is still available.
