A Message from the Chief Executive Officer
In 1996, Hospice of Lancaster County opened The Essa Flory Hospice Center, the first free-standing inpatient hospice center in Pennsylvania. As we mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Center, we are proud to have cared for more than 5,000 people and their families in the Inpatient Center.
While most patients receive care in their homes, the Hospice Center has enabled Hospice of Lancaster County to offer a more complete continuum of care that was not previously possible. Patients and families come to the Inpatient Center to have pain and other difficult symptoms brought under control and once stabilized and comfortable, often return home. When coping with a serious illness, the Center provides a serene, comforting environment, and around-the-clock care which our community has come to rely on. More and more families in our community have experienced care in the Center over the last ten years, with all 12 patient rooms typically occupied on any given day. Hospice of Lancaster County is currently working to determine how best to expand our inpatient hospice services in order to meet this growing need.
In the Spring Issue of Hospice Horizons, you can read testimonials from just a few of the families whose loved ones have been cared for at the Hospice Center. You'll also read more about one of our greatest assets, our Hospice volunteers. I am very proud to report that Hospice of Lancaster County now has more than 900 volunteers, people who visit patients in their homes, offer support to the bereaved, help at the Labor Day Auction, and last but not least, comfort families visiting the Hospice Center. As we celebrate volunteerism this spring, I would like to thank each and every one of these volunteers who contribute in a variety of ways to the success of the organization. Without your work on behalf of our patients and families, Hospice of Lancaster County would not be able to care so well for so many. Thank you for your personal support of Hospice of Lancaster County.
Sincerely,
Steve M. Knaub
