Children
& Teen Support

Do your children or teens feel like they are the only ones who have experienced a significant loss?

Do you realize that talking is the least likely way for children to mourn the loss of someone they cared about?

Amid serious illness and death, children and teens are often overlooked, yet their needs are significant. Coping Kids provides consultations, assessments, groups and individual sessions for children and teens. Hospice bereavement counselors who specialize in grief and loss provide a variety of services to families impacted by illness and death.

Family Support

One of the most meaningful opportunities for families who have had a significant loss is the chance to talk with others who have a similar experience. Coping Kids allows children and teens to learn about grief and one another while sharing a meal, having fun and receiving understanding and support.

Preschoolers, children ages 5-12, teens ages 13-18, and adults each meet separately on Coping Kids evenings. While the children and teens meet for an activity, adults are encouraged to stay and talk with other adults and counselors about the challenges of parenting grieving teens and children. The PATHways Center offers this program as an 8-week session in the fall and two 6-week sessions in the spring, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings. Families are asked to commit to attending an entire session so as to gain the most benefit.

To participate in Coping Kids, please call us at (717) 391-2413 or (717) 733-0699, or click on the Initial Information Form below, complete and mail to The PATHways Center at Hospice of Lancaster County, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125. We are happy to answer any of your questions, discuss your concerns and help you determine what form of support is best for you and your children.

Individual Consultation

If you would like to explore the individual needs of your child, teen or family, our bereavement counselors are available. Should professional assistance be needed beyond the scope of the services we offer, our staff can recommend additional support through local resources.

Community Resource

Information, support, grief groups, books and videos, written materials and individualized training on children and grief to professionals and schools are also available.

Camp Chimaqua

The Camp Chimaqua bereavement camp provides a healing environment that is safe and accepting, where children learn to understand and express their feelings about grief and loss. Held one weekend each June, Camp Chimaqua is for children ages 6-12 who are coping with the death of someone they loved. Click here for more information on this year’s Camp Chimaqua.
